HISTORY
St. Joseph's parish was established by Bishop William Quarter, first Bishop of Chicago, in 1846. The original St. Joseph's Church, erected on the northwest corner of Cass (now Wabash) and Chicago Avenue, burned in the Chicago fire of 1871. After the fire, the parishioners built a wooden church on the original site, but the church was eventually moved on rollers to its present location. Shortly thereafter, the predominantly German congregation began to erect the magnificent, basilica-like Gothic church, which was completed in 1878. Outstanding are the stained glass windows imported from Munich, the Hutchins pipe organ, the marble altar with a relief of the death of St. Joseph, the marble and brass altar rails, and the beautiful reredos that rise behind the altar. For information on tours of the church, call the Parish House at 312-787-7174.
